The University of Toronto Varsity Blues basketball teams take on the Laurentian Voyageurs and York Lions on the road this weekend (Jan. 22-23).
U of T is in Sudbury, Ont. to take on the Voyageurs tonight with the games scheduled to be broadcast live through
ssncanada.ca. The Blues then travel back to Toronto to face cross-town rivals York Lions tomorrow at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The women are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., with the men to follow at 8 p.m. on both nights.
The sixth-place Varsity Blues women’s team (6-8) went 1-1 last weekend. Head coach Michèle Bélanger recorded her 700th career victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday, Jan. 15 before falling to the first-place Ravens on Saturday night.
Fourth-year forward Nicki Schutz leads the Blues and is ranked fourth in the OUA, averaging 17.5 points per game. The Toronto native is also ranked second in the OUA and third in the CIS with 10.8 boards per game.
The Laurentian Voyaguers (8-6) are in a three-way tie with the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Ryerson Rams for third place in the OUA East, while the York Lions are 2-12 and in a distance seventh behind the Blues.
The Blues men’s team will look to rebound from an 0-2 outing a week ago. With losses to the Gee-Gees and Ravens, Toronto looks to improve on their 6-6 regular-season record.
Toronto is led by OUA all-star Nick Magalas (Burlington, Ont.), who averages 16.17 points per game. Magalas was named the Varsity Blues and OUA athlete of the week (Jan. 11-17) after two spectacular performances, including a 33-point performance in which he recorded his 1000th career point against the No. 2 Ravens.
Fellow fifth-year veterans Nick Snow (London, Ont.) and Rob Paris (St. Catharines, Ont.) average 13.2 and 13.6 points per game, respectively. Paris is 39 points shy of hitting the 1000th point milestone as a Varsity Blue. Fourth-year forward Drazen Glisic (Sarajevo, BIH) leads the team with 9.1 boards per game.
The Voyaguers (4-8) are tied with the Ryerson Rams for fifth place, while the Lions are 2-10 and in seventh place. The Blues, in need to four points this weekend, look to pass Queen’s for the number three spot in the OUA East division.
