BASEBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER TO DEFENDING CHAMPS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team went 0-2 against the defending OUA champion McMaster Marauders on Sunday, September 20 at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.

The Blues fell 6-3 in the first game and again came up short in the second, losing 5-1.

Toronto took an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning of game one. The Marauders responded, adding a single run in both the second and fourth to tie the game at 2-2.

The Blues went ahead again in the bottom of the sixth inning before McMaster again evened the score, leaving the game tied, 3-3, heading into extra innings.

The Marauders took charge in top of the ninth, scoring three runs to gain a commanding lead. Despite their best efforts, the Blues were unable to counter and fell 6-3.

Fourth-year veteran Chris Dahiroc (Ajax, Ont.) led the Blues going four-of-five with one RBI, while Pat Janssen (Toronto) was three-of-five with one RBI. Toronto native David Fallico went three-of-four and scored two runs in the loss.

The Marauders carried their ninth inning momentum into the second game, shutting out the Blues throughout the first five innings, while building a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Blues catcher Jeremy Hopkins (Toronto) drove in Jamie Lekas (Toronto) for what would be Toronto’s lone tally of the game.

Lekas led the Blues, going two-of-three and scoring a run.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 26 when they travel to St. Catharines, Ont. for a doubleheader versus the Brock Badgers. Game times are scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m.
