WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL EDGED BY BADGERS

Fifth-year left side hitter Heather Bansley tallied a career-high 33 kills as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team fell 3-2 to the Brock Badgers on Friday, November 27 in St. Catharines, Ont.

The Blues dropped the first two sets 25-21, 25-22 but battled back to force a fifth and deciding game with two 25-21 victories in the third and fourth sets. Unfortunately, Bansley’s (Waterdown, Ont.) game-high 33 kills, 24 digs and five serving aces were not enough as Toronto was unable to complete the comeback, dropping the fifth set 15-7.

Fourth-year outside hitter Karlee Diesing (Coquitlam, B.C.) tallied 13 kills and seven digs, while first-year libero Piril Candas (Izmir, Turkey) recorded 11 digs. Blues setter Kathleen Mahannah had 48 assists in the loss.

The Badgers were led by Erin Mercer’s 12 kills and 12 digs. Rachel Roorda had 11 kills, while Ally Fast and Kaila Wiley garnered 14 and 20 digs, respectively.

The Varsity Blues head into the holiday break with a 5-4 record and in first place in the OUA East division.

Toronto returns to the court when they host the National Invitational Tournament, December 28-30, at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
