BLUES BASKETBALL UPSETS NO. 4 MCMASTER 77-67

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s basketball bounced back from last week’s loss to the Waterloo Warriors to upset the No. 4 McMaster Marauders, 77-67, at Burridge Gymnasium in Hamilton, Ont.

The No. 8 Blues are now 2-1 in OUA regular season action and 11-2 overall in 2009-10 with their only two losses coming at the hands of the Warriors.

Led by fifth-year forward Pat Sewell’s (London, Ont.) 21 points and six rebounds, Toronto had four players in double figures and as a team shot over 50% from the floor, was 8-of-13 from beyond the arc and nailed 71% of their free throws.

McMaster jumped out to an early three point lead and led 21-18 after the first quarter of play. The Blues defence took over and stymied the Marauders offence, holding them to under 18 points over the next three quarters.

Toronto shooters were impressive while MAC’s suffered, shooting just 39% (24-for-61), 20% from three-point land and only 52% from the line.

Drazen Glisic (Sarajevo, BIH) added 16 points and hauled in a team-high seven rebounds, while Nick Magalas (Burlington, Ont.) knocked down 14, had four rebounds, five assists and four steals, as the Blues outscored the Marauders in the final three frames to close out the 10-point victory.

MAC’s Keenan Jappesen (Stoney Creek, Ont.) led all players with 23 points and 11 rebounds. He also had three assists, four steals and one blocked shot.

The Varsity Blues are back on the road tomorrow night as they travel to Thunder Bay, Ont. to take the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
