The University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team took the Western Mustangs into extra innings in game 2 of the OUA semifinals on Sunday, October 11, eventually falling 5-1 to end their 2009 season at Labatt Park in London, Ont.
The game featured a terrific pitcher’s duel between third-year Varsity Blue Tyler Wilson (Port Hope, Ont.) and Western’s Andrew Bergman (Pickering, Ont.).
The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when shortstop Shawn Robinson's (Sarnia, Ont.) infield single scored Andrew Thompson (Brampton, Ont.) from third base.
The Blues would even the score in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, veteran catcher Jeremy Hopkins (Toronto) doubled to centre field. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Hopkins would score on a RBI single by Khalil Sheriff (Scarborough, Ont.).
The game remained deadlocked until the top of the 10th when Western cashed in four unearned runs on two Blues errors.
U of T loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th, but Western’s second-year relief pitcher Adam Paish (Mississauga, Ont.) was able to get two infield fly outs to preserve the victory.
Wilson pitched eight innings for the Blues, allowing only five hits and striking out two.
With the loss, the Varsity Blues season comes to a close, while the Western Mustangs advance to the OUA baseball final versus the Laurier Golden Hawks.
