GALLO PITCHES NO HITTER, BLUES GO 1-1 VS LAURIER

Jake Gallo threw a complete game no-hitter as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues went 1-1 in doubleheader action with the Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday, September 30 at Bechtel Park in Waterloo, Ont.

The fifth-year Blues pitcher, Gallo (Toronto) led the Varsity Blues to a 5-0 win in game one, facing 22 batters in seven innings, allowing no runs and was one walk shy of a perfect game.

In game two, however, the Hawks bounced back to earn a 3-2 victory.

In the first match-up, the Varsity Blues had very productive and efficient at-bats. Jeremy Hopkins (Toronto), Pat Janssen (Toronto), and designated hitter Khalil Sheriff (Scarborough, Ont.) all smacked doubles, with Hopkins and Sheriff recording one and three RBI, respectively.

In the end, the Hawks could not compete with Toronto’s ace pitcher and coupled with the team’s strong showing at the plate, the Varsity Blues went on to win by a score of 5-0.

Laurier pitcher Steven Zagrodny (Mississauga, Ont.) threw five strike-outs for the Golden Hawks in game two, who turned things around and played a much more competitive second game.

Details to come.

The Varsity Blues return to the field next Saturday, October 3 when they host a doubleheader versus the Guelph Gryphons at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. Game times are scheduled for 12 and 2:30 p.m.
