MEN’S VOLLEYBALL MAULS LIONS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team came away with a 3-0 victory over the York Lions on Thursday, January 15 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

Steven Kung (Toronto) displayed his versatility and set the tone for the Blues in the first set, recording the first five points of the game with kills, perfectly placed tips and blocking. The Lions rallied to even things up throughout most of the set but a couple of Kyle Konietzny (Toronto) kills would secure a 28-26 win for the Blues.

Toronto pulled away from the Lions over the next two games. The Blues held a comfortable lead throughout the second set to take it 25-19 and rounded out their shut out win with a 10-point run to take the third set 25-15.

Kung was named the Blues player of the game, leading all players with 16 kills and five digs. Third-year setter Deagan McDonald (Calgary, Alta.) controlled the ball well all night, recording 33 assists in the victory.

York’s player of the game Reid Hall (Georgetown, Ont.) led his team with 14 kills in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action this Sunday, January 18 when they travel across town to take on the Ryerson Rams. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
