The University of Toronto Varsity Blues fastpitch team went 3-1 over the weekend (Sept. 27-28) as they swept the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday and split the doubleheader with the defending OIWFA champion Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday at Waterloo Park.
The Blues jumped out to an early lead on Saturday as Karlene Headley-Cooper and Charlsie Searle drove in two runs in the first inning. The Blues continued to dominate, tallying one run in each of the next five innings. Headley-Cooper capped off the 7-0 victory with a homerun in the sixth inning as Searle pitched the entire game for the Blues, amassing eight strike outs.
The second game of the day was much closer, as Waterloo scored five runs in the third inning to take the lead. The Blues replied with two runs of their own, but it was a back-and-forth battle as the Warriors led by three after three innings. Toronto mounted a come back when Melanie Monson knocked in two runs and scored herself to tie the game. Pinch hitter Surina Sud brought Megan Barkway in for the winning run and the Blues held firm to win the game 7-6.
Toronto recorded a 4-2 victory over the defending OIWFA champions Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday. Laurier took a one-run lead in the bottom of the second inning but the Blues went on the attack and batted in four unanswered runs. With stellar defensive play and Monson on the mound, the Blues came away with a convincing victory over the Hawks.
In the second game of the double header, the Hawks came away with a 9-3 victory over the Blues, displaying their talent and offensive skills. Headley-Cooper and Heather Roth completed their fourth multi-hit game of the weekend in the loss.
