BLUES FALL TO LANCERS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s rugby team fell 40-5 to the Windsor Lancers on Saturday, September 20.

Facing a strong Lancers squad, Toronto found themselves down 28-0 at the half.

The Blues showed lots of composure in the second half, and it finally paid off in the 66th minute when winger Kasim Bulich crossed in the corner for the Blues only try of the game.

Steve Young led the Lancers with two tries and five conversions amassing half of Windsor’s team points.

“You have to hand it to Windsor. They knew what they could do well, and they did it over and over again,” stated Varsity Blues head rugby coach Garth Gottfried. “We were unable to adapt and could not keep them out of our end with any success.”

The Blues return home next Saturday, September 27 to face the Laurier Golden Hawks at 1 p.m. at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus field.

In other news, the Varsity Blues men’s rugby team hosts their annual alumni game on Thursday, September 25 at 7 p.m. on the University of Toronto’s back campus field.

Quite a few players from Blues teams will be in attendance, including some from Toronto’s last title-winning season in 1982.

The Blues men’s rugby team has a strong alumni core including current Toronto mayor David Miller and the MP for Wellington-Halton Hills, the Honourable Michael Chong.

"U of T has a long and storied tradition of rugby excellence,” said Chong. “Through U of T rugby, I've met many life-long friends and shared many memorable experiences. I'm proud to have played rugby for the Varsity Blues and proud to support them today."

All former Blues men’s rugby players are invited to attend the game and post-match function on Thursday, or to contact the team at rugby.men@utoronto.ca.
