The Varsity Blues fastpitch team got their first two wins of the season on Saturday, September 20 when they mercied the Carleton Ravens 8-0 and 8-1 in only five innings of play. Sunday, however, was another story as the Blues battled the Ottawa Gee-Gees, losing 5-0 and a heart- breaking 3-2 loss.
In the first inning of the first game, the Blues scored the all important first run when lead-off batter Lauren Shute reached first base and later scored on a double from Karlene Headley-Cooper. Pitcher Mel Monson was working her way quickly through the Ravens line-up but the Blues bats were quiet until the fourth inning when they batted around. Nine players in total hit safely as the Blues put up six runs in the inning.
Carleton would get one back in the fifth inning but that would be all as pitcher Mel Monson was in total control of the game that lasted only 50 minutes. Monson was not only earned her first win; she came through with two runs, a double and a single with one RBI. Headley-Cooper and Alex Oosterhof also contributed with three RBIs.
In the second game of the day, the Blues again jumped out to an early lead with Headley-Cooper converting a Shute double to lead off the inning, and Ridout and Sud both added runs in the third. However, the fourth inning was again the inning when the Blues blew the game wide open with five runs. Shute had her best game of the season with two doubles and a single, as did rookie Surina Sud had her best day at the plate with two RBIs, two runs scored, a single and a double. Charlsie Searle pitched a strong game allowing only three hits for her first win of the season.
After successful outings on Saturday, the Blues come up against a much tougher Ottawa Gee-Gees squad on Sunday. The Gee-Gees jumped out to an early lead and the Blues bats never got going despite solid defence and stellar pitching from Monson. Giving up only two more runs on errors, Toronto could not find a way back into the game.
The Blues seemed to be back on track in the second game of the back-to-back
when Winnie Law scored a run in the first inning to give Toronto the early lead. The Blues added a second run in the fourth when lead-off batter Nishi was driven home safely by pinch hitter Oosterhof's drive to centre field.
The Gee-Gees got one back in the bottom of the fourth and again in the fifth inning to tie the game at two. The Blues loaded the bases in the top of the seventh but could not convert. Ottawa then scored on a two-out drive to left field for the 3-2 win.
The Blues travel to Waterloo Park this coming weekend, September 27-28 to take on the Waterloo Warriors and the defending OIWFA champions Laurier Golden Hawks.
