RAINY WEEKEND FOR BLUES FASTPITCH

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s fastpitch team dropped two games to the Brock Badgers this weekend (Sept. 13), before getting rained out against McMaster Marauders on Sunday.

In their first game versus the Badgers on Saturday, Charlsie Searle pitched a great game, however defensive errors in difficult weather conditions proved costly. Karlene Headley-Cooper, Karen Nishi and Mel Monson all scored for the Blues. U of T rallied to score two runs in the seventh inning to cut the lead to one, 4-3, but with the bases loaded and two outs, Headley-Cooper flied out to end the game.

In the second game, the Badgers jumped out to an early lead, scoring two quick runs in the first inning. Monson came up to bat with Lauren Shute and Headley-Cooper on base and drove them both home to tie the game. The Blues took the lead in the third when a Heather Roth double was converted by Shute. Toronto continued to increase the lead when Karlene Headley-Cooper scored on another Mel Monson RBI.

The Blues seemed to be in total control behind the consistent pitching of Monson, however, the unravelling began in the top of the sixth inning when two walks were hit home by a Badgers left-field drive. The Blues failed to mount any real come back in the last two innings and fell 5-4.

Due to weather conditions, Sunday’s games against the McMaster Marauders were rained out.

The Blues take on the visiting Carleton Ravens on Saturday, September 20 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. All games will be played at Birchwood Park in Mississauga.
