BLUES LOSE OPENER TO GAELS

Rugby Action
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's rugby team fell to a heavily favoured Queen's Gaels squad 86-3 on Saturday, September 6 in their first match of the season.

The Gaels opened up the scoring quickly when Chris Barrett (Vancouver, B.C.) broke free and scored his first of what would be four tries. Much of the first half was dominated by the Gaels, but the Blues got on board at the three minute mark of the second half with a penalty goal.

Queen’s has great depth and organizational consistency as they have 150 rugby players at their disposal, while the Blues currently only have 27 players to choose from.

"If U of T can get one-third of the size of Queen's program, that is to say 50 dedicated players, then we will soon be playing in the post-season with regularity,” said men’s rugby head coach Garth Gottfried. “The players took the loss well, realizing that what we have to work on the most is mental concentration.”

The Blues will look to bounce back when they face Trent in their home opener this Saturday, September 13 at 1 p.m. at Scarborough campus.
