TORONTO TROUNCES THUNDERWOLVES 90-76

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s basketball team came away with a 90-76 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday, November 8 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

The Blues outscored the Thunderwolves in all but the fourth quarter and held a solid lead for the entire game. Toronto co-captain and player of the game Sherri Pierce (Brampton, Ont.) had a great first half, sinking two from beyond the arc and tallying 11 points for the Blues.

Third-year guard Tasia McKenna (Timberlea, N.S.) attempted to rally the Thunderwolves with eight points in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late and the Blues came away with the convincing 90-76 victory.

Toronto spread the scoring across the floor, with Pierce and Alaine Hutton (Hamilton, Ont.) leading with 17 points each. Kemptville, Ont. native Tara Kinnear added 16 points and eight boards, while second-year guard Joanna Medri (Toronto) had 12 points, five boards and five steals. Nicki Shutz (Toronto) recorded eight points and led the Blues with 10 boards in the victory.

Lakehead forward Kathryn Verboom (Thunder Bay, Ont.) recorded a double-double, leading all players with 18 points and 12 boards. Ckiaki Nakamura (Nagasaki, JAP) and Shannon Vellinga (Thunder Bay, Ont.) tallied 14 and 12 points, respectively, while McKenna added eight boards to her 10 points on the night.

The Varsity Blues are on the road next weekend, facing the Windsor Lancers on Friday, November 14 and the Western Mustangs on Saturday, November 15. Both games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
