Nick Magalas’ 19 first-half points helped guide the University of Toronto men’s basketball team (5-3) to a convincing 88-64 win over the defending CIS champion Brock University Badgers (4-3) on Friday, November 28 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Toronto was untouchable in the first half, shooting 58% from the floor and opening up a 23-point lead at the end of two quarters of play.
The Blues picked up where they left on in the first half; consistently attacking the basket and making the extra pass to the open man.
The home side saw production from everyone on this night. Veteran Ahmed Nazmi (Cairo, Egypt) and first-year transfer student Pat Sewell held the hot hand in the third and capped it off nicely with an emphatic Sewell dunk.
The final frame saw second-year player Justin Holmes hit three-of-four, including three three-pointers, while second-year centre Andrew Wasik also got in on the fun, scoring seven of his 10 points in the last 10 minutes.
Fourth-year guard Magalas (Burlington, Ont.) had a team-high 19 points, while Blues player of the game, Ahmed Nazmi (Cairo, Egypt), also added 15 points and five rebounds in the victory. Sewell (London, Ont.) had a double-double, recording 13 points and 12 boards.
Fifth-year Badger, Owen White (Port Hope, Ont.), led all players with 20 points and seven rebounds. His fellow teammates from St. Catharines, Ont., Didi Murkendi and Joel Whitty both added 16 and 13 points respectively.
This was a much-needed win for the Blues after dropping two on the road last weekend. The men’s basketball team will be taking on Guelph Gryphons tomorrow night. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at U of T’s Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
