The University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Carleton University Ravens, 13-9, to capture the 2008 OUA Women's Water Polo Championship on Sunday, November 23rd at the Ravens Pool.
Two-time OUA all-star and Blues player of the game Nicole Brown led the team with five goals on the afternoon guiding her squad past the two-time defending champion Ravens in convincing fashion.
The Blues jumped out of the gates early and notched the first goal of the game within the first minute of play. Not to be denied, the Ravens would score four of the next five goals to take a three-goal lead.
Toronto answered before time expired in the second quarter to pull within one (6-5) at the halfway point of the final game.
The Varsity Blues took control of the match in the third quarter, outscoring the Ravens 6-2 to lead 11-8 heading into the final frame.
Toronto’s defence was outstanding in the second half, holding off the high-powered Carleton offence and limiting them to three goals in the final two quarters of the game.
OUA all-star Casey Pottier (Kitchener, Ont.) added three goals, Danielle Zanardo (Toronto) and Laura Shaw (Vancouver) each added two, while Susan Armstrong, (Ottawa) tallied one goal in the victory.
Ravens player of the game and the OUA championship most valuable player, Rachel Baxter (Ottawa) scored five goals in the loss, Sydney Ferguson (Etobicoke, Ont.) added two, while Liz Aldrich (Ottawa) and Rachelle Aldrich, Ottawa, Ontario each added one in the loss to Toronto.
