The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team fell 3-2 to the Western Mustangs in a tightly contested match on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
The Blues came out on fire, controlling the ball well to come away with a 25-20 win.
Toronto kept things close at the beginning of the second set but Western pulled away to take it 25-16. The Blue and White came back to take the closest game of the night 26-24, however, the Mustangs battled hard to win the last two sets 25-19, 15-12 and secure the 3-2 victory.
Elaine Screaton’s (Calgary, Alta.) 16 kills and 12 digs led the Mustangs, while London, Ont. natives Sara Farell and Melissa Mann posted 13 kills apiece in the victory. Fourth-year libero Andrea Ruste (Edmonton, Alta.) and setter Nicole Smyrnios (London, Ont.) had 29 and 20 digs, respectively.
Kristina Valjas (Toronto) led the Blues with 14 kills and 10 digs, while Heather Bansley (Waterdown, Ont.) added 11 kills and 19 digs. Blues player of the game Michelle Wood (Toronto) recorded 35 digs in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return home to host their second annual Think Pink game in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation against the Ryerson Rams next Saturday, November 29 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
