First-year standout Mike Manning (Vernon, B.C.) tallied 17 kills as the University of Toronto men’s volleyball team recorded a 3-1 victory over the Windsor Lancers on Friday, November 21 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
The Blues dominated the first game 25-13 but the Lancers would bounce back and challenge Toronto throughout the next three sets. Windsor kept a minimal lead throughout the entire second set and was able to come away with a 25-22 victory.
The Blues came back in the third set but the Lancers continued to press. With the game tied 14-14, the rest of the match proved to be a classic back-and-forth battle as both teams exchanged points. However, it was Toronto who came out on top as a spectacular Manning spike took the third set 25-22.
Toronto pulled away from Windsor, holding a comfortable lead throughout the majority of the fourth set, and another Manning kill would secure the 25-19 win.
Kyle Williamson (Essex, Ont.) led the Lancers with 16 kills and eight digs and third-year setter Adam Prieur (Tecumseh, Ont.) notched 38 assists in the loss.
Manning’s 17 kills would lead all players, while fellow first-year and Blues player of the game Mitchell Woodside (Clyde River, P.E.I.) was dominant in the setter position for the Blues, recording 43 assists in the 3-1 victory. Steven Kung (Toronto) added 14 kills and eight digs, while fifth-year veteran Jessi Lelliott (Kelowna, B.C.) had 10 kills and 15 digs.
The Varsity Blues return home tomorrow afternoon to host the Western Mustangs at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Game time is schedule for 4 p.m.
