BLUES FALL TO RAMS IN SEASON OPENER

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s basketball team fell 72-65 to the Ryerson Rams in their 2008-09 season opener on Friday, October 31 at Kerr Hall.

The Blues last fell to the Rams 66-65 on November 23, 2001 at U of T’s Athletic Centre Sports Gym.

Ryerson was automatic from beyond the three-point line in the first half, building a 14-point lead at the break. Toronto would outscore Ryerson in the second half but the Rams defence was enough to hold on for the win.

Lisa Goldring (Burlington, Ont.) led the Rams offensively, with 20 points and five rebounds. Rebecca Cox (Renfrew, Ont.) added 16 points and five rebounds for the Rams, while Lacey O'Sullivan (Port Colbourne, Ont.) poured in 11 points and five assists.

Leading the way for the Varsity Blues was first-year transfer student Tara Kinnear (Kemptville, Ont.), who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Nicki Schutz (Toronto, Ont.) posted 16 points and nine boards in the loss.

The Varsity Blues host their home opener tomorrow in the second game of a home-and-home series, at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
