Fourth-year veteran Mike Del Monte broke one of the longest standing OUA records in the men’s 1000m to lead the Varsity Blues men’s track and field team to a sixth-place finish at the 2010 OUA championships hosted by the York Lions, February 26-27.

The Guelph, Ont. native set both a field house and OUA record, crossing the finish line in 2:23.99 to better Waterloo’s Harvey Mitro’s record time of 2:24.07, set in 1987.  Matt Hulse of the Queen’s Gaels was second in 2:24.66.

Currently completing his Master’s in theology, Del Monte earned his second OUA all-star nod of the season.  He was named to the second team for his ninth-place finish at the 2009 OUA cross country championships and earned first team status for his first-place finish this weekend.   Del Monte is currently ranked first going into the CIS track and field championships, according to Sporting Canada rankings.
