Colin Russell, a 2008 Olympian from Burlington, was named CIS male swimmer of the year for the second consecutive season after he claimed seven medals in as many races including three individual gold and two relay gold, an individual second-place finish and a relay silver for a FINA score of 1806.

 

The fifth-year veteran also earned the Sprinter’s Cup for the second time in as many years, having defended his titles in both the 50- and 100-metre freestyle events, and helped his team to a second-place overall finish behind the 2010 CIS swimming champions Calgary Dinos.

 

In his final university championship, the arts and science major broke the CIS record in the men’s 50-metre freestyle at Varsity Pool on Friday with a time of 21.73.  He went on to win the 100 free on Saturday (47.94), 0.73 seconds ahead of Laval’s Dominique Massie-Martel. He also captured gold in the 200 free (1:45.04), was a member of the first-place 4x200 free and 4x100 medley relay teams, and was a silver medallist in the 50 breast (27.73) and the 4x100 free relay.
