A second-year forward from Vaughan, Ont., David Thomson racked up four points in leading the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team to two big season-opening wins at home this weekend (Oct. 4-5).Â
The psychology/criminology major helped the Blues kick off the season with a bang, assisting on Joey Manchurek’s goal just 19 seconds into Toronto’s home opener on Friday night. Thomson didn’t stop there as he netted the game-winner late in the third period, sending a booming shot into the bottom left corner of the net to lead the Blues to a 3-2 upset win over the No. 10 nationally-ranked Guelph Gryphons.
Thomson, who helped Canada to a bronze-medal finish at the 2019 FISU Winter Universiade last February, continued to roll as the Blues topped the York Lions, 5-3, on Saturday night. He fed teammate Scott Kirton a centering pass early in the first period to knot the game at 1-1 and went onto score on a nifty move on a penalty shot midway through the third period to seal the victory.
Thomson co-leads the province in goals (2) and points (4) after the opening weekend of OUA men’s hockey action.
