First-year goalie Erica Fryer amassed 63 saves as the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs in a best-of-three OUA semifinal series to advance to their first McCaw Cup final since 2007-08 this past weekend.
Fryer made a series-high 27 saves and recorded her first career post-season shut out as the Blues took Game 1, 3-0, in London on Wednesday night. After posting 14 saves in a 3-1 Game 2 loss, the kinesiology major from Amherstburg, Ont., made 22 saves as Toronto edged the Mustangs, 2-1, in Game 3 to book their ticket to the U SPORTS championship in P.E.I. in two weeks.
Fryer held a .940 save percentage through the series and her 1.35 goals against average would have ranked second among goaltenders in the OUA regular season.
The Blues will now face the Guelph Gryphons in the McCaw Cup final this Saturday, March 9 in Guelph. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
