Fourth-year middle distance specialist Sacha Smart won one gold and two silver medals in helping the Varsity Blues men’s track and field team to their first podium finish in over 20 years at the CIS championships this past weekend at York University.

Smart claimed the men’s 1000m title in a time of 2:23.92, edging out Corey Bellemore of Windsor (2:24.36) by 0.44 seconds.

The kinesiology major from Toronto followed that up with a silver-medal finish in the 600m in a time of 1:19.11. He also ran the third leg of Toronto’s silver-medal winning 4x400 relay team to catapult U of T two spots in the standings to earn the team bronze medal.
