U of T Olympian Colin Russell picked up two silver medals at the Canadian spring national championships, March 11-14, at University of Toronto’s Varsity Pool.
Russell placed second, behind fellow Olympian Brent Hayden in both the men’s 100m and 200m freestyle.
The Oakville, Ont. native who set a national record at the CIS championships last month, broke his previous record (1:43.31) with a time of 1:42.87 but fell just short of Hayden’s new Canadian mark of 1:42.35 in the 200m freestyle.
The next day, Russell was right on Hayden’s heels and also bettered his previous national mark in the 100m freestyle (47.23), set at the 2008-09 CIS championships, in a time of 46.94 seconds but again fell just shy of Hayden’s time of 46.27.
