Hochan Ryu of the University of Toronto was named the OUA male swimmer of the year in leading the Varsity Blues men’s swimming team to their 12th consecutive provincial title this past weekend (Feb. 5-7) in Ottawa.
Ryu also earned the Dr. Jeno Tihanyu award for individual medley (IM) excellence. The Richmond Hill, Ont., native won three individual titles, one silver medal and helped Toronto’s 800 freestyle relay team to gold over the three-day meet.
A cognitive science major, Ryu opened the meet by winning the 200 butterfly (1:58.05), finishing just under two seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer.
He followed that up with a gold-medal performance in the 200 IM (2:00.48), winning by over three seconds.
Day 3 saw Ryu place second in the 200 freestyle before completing the IM sweep with a first-place finish in the 400 IM in 4:18.59.Â
