Fifth-year defender Diana Esteireiro scored her only two goals of the season on the biggest stage of them all to lead the Varsity Blues women’s soccer team to a fifth-place finish at the 2013 CIS championship, Nov. 7-10, held here at Varsity Centre.
Named a second-team all-Canadian on Wednesday, November 6, during the CIS awards gala, the Etobicoke native rallied the troops after a heartbreaking defeat the Cape Breton Capers in the Blues opening match of the eight-team tournament.Â
Esteireiro opened the scoring against Laurier in the consolation semifinal with a booming shot off a free kick, 28 yards out, into the top right corner of the net. Toronto went on to win the game 2-1 and would play Laval Rouge et Or in the fight for fifth.
Playing in her final game as a Varsity Blue, the English major opened the scoring against Laval once again, and in identical fashion, cracked a free kick from 25 yards out and into the top right corner to give her team the early lead. It was her second goal of the championship as Toronto went onto to defeat Laval to finish in fifth place.
