Varsity Blues wrestler Jessica Fitzgerald captured a gold medal in the women’s 67kg weight class and was named the outstanding female wrestler at the 2008-09 OUA championships on Saturday, February 14th in St. Catharines, Ont.
The Bancroft, Ont. native defeated Ashley Routliffe (Lasalle, Ont.) of the Guelph Gryphons in final to finish first and garner OUA first team all-star status.
Fitzgerald, a fifth-year wrestler and second-year pharmacy major, became only the second Varsity Blue, and first since 1997-98 (Teresa Piotrowski), to be named the outstanding female wrestler - awarded annual to the wrestler most worthy in ability and sportsmanship.
With the win, Fitzgerald earns a trip to the CIS championships, February 27-28 hosted by the University of Calgary.
