Fourth-year veteran Mike Smerek broke two records and earned three individual medals in leading the Varsity Blues to their ninth consecutive title at the 2012 OUA swimming championships, February 9-11, at Laurentian University.
Smerek opened the meet on Day 2 with a first-place finish in the men’s 100-metre freestyle. The St. Catharines, Ont., native followed that up with an OUA record-breaking swim in the 50-metre butterfly (24.04 seconds) just four events later.
Even more impressive, Smerek jumped right back into the water and helped Toronto’s men set a new record and place first in the 400 medley relay.
A fourth-year physical education major, Smerek broke his second record in as many nights on the final day of the three-day meet, touching the wall in 53.57 seconds in the 100 butterfly.
