Fourth-year goalkeeper John Smits came up with two huge saves in penalty kicks in leading the Varsity Blues to a 2-1 (4-2 penalty kicks) victory over the Ryerson Rams in OUA men’s soccer quarter-final action on Sunday at Varsity Centre.
 
The Mississauga, Ont., native allowed just one goal against in the 13^th minute and went onto deny every opportunity over the next 107 minutes of regulation and over time.
 
A fifth-year biology major, Smits then stepped up and posted huge diving saves on Ryerson’s first and fourth shooters to secure Toronto’s ticket to the OUA Final Four at Carleton next weekend.
