David Wright is the lead founder of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Mountain Biking Team and Varsity Mountain biking in Ontario.
At U of T, he was an elected member of the Council of Athletics and Recreation (CAR) and served on various sub committees such as sponsorship, equity and membership. Wright has coached student-athletes who have gone on to represent U of T, Ontario and Canada at the provincial, national and international levels. His U of T athletes consistently rank as one of the top academically performing varsity teams. He is the chairperson of the Ontario University Mountain Bike Race Council and has helped establish 12 university mountain biking clubs across the province.
Wright and the Blues organize an annual fundraising bike tune-up and an annual clean-up of Toronto’s Don Valley Urban Forest Trails, which over the years has seen the removal of over 44,000 pounds of garbage from the forest floor. Wright has been a spokesperson for sustainable nature trail development on CBC radio and was a member of the City of Toronto’s Task Force to Bring Back the Don.
Formally inducted into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments and contributions to the sport and his steadfast support of student-athletes as a coach, he is also a volunteer leader with Boy Scouts Canada and holds a Master’s degree in Adult Education and Community Development from OISE.
In 2019 David was presented the Joan E. Foley Award by the President of the University at a formal reception. This is one of the schools most distinguished awards presented annually to one faculty or staff member who has made a distinctive and lasting contribution to enhancing the quality of the undergraduate and graduate student experience at the University of Toronto.
Wright is currently a Director within U of T’s Division of University Advancement.
