Biography
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues are excited to share the commitment of Adaora Opara to the women's swimming program for the 2026-27 season.
"U of T stood out to me for its elite swim program, inspiring coaches, and outstanding academic reputation," said Opara. "It offers the perfect environment to challenge myself, pursue excellence, and be part of a community that inspires growth in-and-out of the pool."
A 5-foot-7 butterfly and freestyle specialist from Dubai, Opara joins the Blues via GEMS Metropole School and both Markham Aquatics Club and Hamilton Aquatics Dubai.
Opara has already received numerous accolades across her swimming career, including being named GEMS Metropole swimmer of the year. She garnered a silver medal in the 100m butterfly at the 2024 Ontario Winter Swimming Championships with Markham Aquatics Club, and was a junior finalist in the 200m freestyle at the 2025 Swim England National Winter Championships with Hamilton Aquatics Dubai. Opara has also been a member of the United Arab Emirates national swimming team since 2024, representing UAE at several international competitions including the 2025 Asian Youth Games.
“Adaora had a breakthrough this winter in a meet in England (while swimming for Dubai) and those times will score valuable points for the Blues at the national championships," said Varsity Blues swimming head coach Byron MacDonald. "Adaora is obviously a very welcome addition to the team."
Opara is set to study social sciences at the University of Toronto beginning this fall.
Students who sign a letter of intent and/or commit to Varsity Blues intercollegiate teams will be eligible to play at the University of Toronto provided they are academically admissible and have applied through the normal process with the Ontario Universities Application Centre.
