2024 Women's Water Polo Roster
Biography
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's water polo team is proud to announce the addition of Josie Hlohovsky Andrist to their 2023-24 roster.
Andrist has played and traveled with Team Saskatchewan for nine years. She participated in the Canadian National Championships League (NCL) from U12, all the way to senior women. Last year, she captured gold medals as part of Team Saskatchewan’s senior women and U19 team, while adding two silver medals this year.
Internationally, Andrist played with Team Canada as a participant at the senior women's training camp in 2021, and at the selection camp for Jr. Pan Am Games in 2022. That year she was selected to play for Canada at the Youth World Championships in Serbia and was named team captain.
“Josie’s experience is going to be a great asset to our team,” stated Blues Head Coach, George Gross, Jr. “She is a determined player who does not shy away from the physical aspects of the game and can generate offence in a number of ways.”
Outside of water polo, Andrist was a multi-sport performer competing in basketball, swimming and triathlon. She worked at her city's newspaper as a freelance journalist for a year. She was also a certified lifeguard and swim instructor for four years and volunteered as a respite care worker for parents during the pandemic.
“I chose the University of Toronto because I've wanted to play water polo in university my whole life, and U of T, in addition to being a great water polo school, is also one of the best schools in the world academically,” offered Andrist. “It's one of the best places for athletes and students and I'm excited to be a part of it. I'm mostly looking forward to playing water polo with different people against different teams, since I've been playing in the same league my whole life. I'm also ready to get back into school and study subjects I'm interested in.”
Andrist will study Journalism at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus.
