Biography

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's water polo team is proud to announce the addition of Calan Falconer to their 2023 roster.

Falconer started playing water polo at eight years of age with the Hamilton Aquatic Club. Two years later he switched to join Hammer Water Polo. For three years he served as captain of his age group team and led the club to numerous medal finishes. When membership shrank, a new club (Southwest) was formed and Falconer was unanimously appointed captain and led the team for five years, consistently ranking in the top three in goals scored in the National Champions League (NCL).

Falconer was chosen to compete at two Team Ontario events. He was also selected to Canada’s Junior National Team and competed in the 2022 Pan Am Games. This past summer, he joined New Haven Hydras and played in USA Water Polo’s Junior Olympics, finishing second overall in Session 3. Showing his focus on academics, he won the Nancy Bardecki scholarship which is awarded to the Mavericks club player with the highest GPA.

“Calan brings excellent defence and a good eye for the net,” offered Blues Director of Recruiting, George Gross, Jr. “His play is very poised under pressure and he has strong legs which provide him with great support.”

Outside the pool, Falconer has been an accomplished multi-sport athlete. He was a starter for his high school volleyball and basketball teams and won MVP in cross-country. He was the head of the Ethics Club and graduated on the Honour Roll. He won the Excellence in Health and Physical Education award, as well as the Cooperative Education award. As a volunteer, he participated in numerous beach clean-ups

“I chose the University of Toronto for many different reasons,” stated Falconer. “Being ranked among the best universities for Kinesiology as well as its one of a kind small knit community and labs for students swayed my decision. However, it was not only the university's academics.  Being the OUA's top men's water polo team for years shows how strong of a program has been developed which will allow me to continue on my path as a student athlete. Briefly, the university's world renowned academics combined with their fantastic water polo program seems like the perfect fit for me and the perfect balance I was searching for in my future endeavours.”

Falconer will major in Kinesiology.
