No stranger to Varsity Blues football and the University of Toronto, Tom Gretes makes his returns in 2010. He graduated in 1980 with a degree in physical education after being a four-year starting defensive back for the Blues. His brother, Steve, also played football at U of T from 1981-84 and his son, George, is currently a fourth-year quarterback-turned-receiver on the Blues roster.
After graduating, Tom began teaching and became the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach of the Northern Secondary School football program, guiding the squad to 11 city championships. At the same time, Tom coached the Varsity Blues defensive backs in intermittent years (1982, 1986, 1994) and was the offensive line coach of the 1993 Vanier Cup championship team. He became York University’s full-time defensive coordinator in 1995 before assuming the role of head coach from 2001-06.
When he is not on the field, Tom enjoys golf, gardening and following the Toronto Maple Leafs. His wife, Sophie, is also a graduate of U of T and his daughter, Nicole, is currently in her third-year at Toronto.
