John DeSouza

John De Souza has been a member of the Varsity Blues field hockey program since 1990.  He has been an assistant to legendary coach Liz Hoffman as well as coaching veteran and current U of T director of intercollegiate and high performance sport director Beth Ali.

He has helped guide the Blues to 13 OUA championship titles, CIS bronze and silver medals and most recently a CIS gold medal performance in 2007 and 2010. 1998 was De Souza’s first tour of duty as the Blues bench boss. He stepped in and took over the helm when Ali took a year sabbatical from coaching.

A graduate of Humber College and a former constable with the Ontario Provincial Police, De Souza played provincially for 13 years and was a national team player for seven years, as well as a member of G.O.A. field hockey club. As a player, De Souza represented Canada at the 1995 Pan American Games and was an assistant coach on 2007 gold-medal winning Pan American Games men’s field hockey team that represented Canada at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. He was the head coach of the men’s national indoor field hockey team that finish seventh at the 2007 World Cup in Vienna, Austria.

De Souza has also been an assistant coach with the Canadian junior men’s field hockey program and has served as a board member of Field Hockey Ontario and Field Hockey Canada.
