Wrestling Selection Criteria

Updated: September 2025
  • All wrestlers must have a minimum three years of practice and competition at the high school level.
  • Full attendance at all practices during the two week tryout period. Any missed practices during this time will result in in that student-athlete not making the team.
  • Wrestlers must demonstrate an acceptable level of strength, coordination, speed, cardiovascular fitness and competitiveness in practice.
  • Must reflect a positive attitude and be willing to communicate and interact with fellow teammates in a respectful manner.
  • An acceptable level of comprehension and knowledge when executing all techniques being taught by the coaching staff.
  • Must be willing to adhere to all the ethical guidelines as per the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.
  • A red-shirt system is in place for wrestlers who make the practice squad with the intention of eventually being integrated into the competition schedule.
  • If an athlete is given a red-shirt it is done so on an individual basis and criteria varies per athlete, per weight class, per year.
  • If an athlete is given a red-shirt and competes, that does not guarantee a spot on the roster the following year. They still will be required to try-out each year.
  • Only wrestling boots allowed on the mat as per the Wrestling Canada Lutte uniform requirements and for safety reasons. No bare feet, no running shoes, no water shoes, no street shoes.

The Varsity Blues wrestling team tryouts will be held in the upper gym at the UofT athletic center (55 Harbord St., Toronto, ON M5S 2W6).  The tryouts will be held during standard season practice times over the first week of practice, starting Mon. Sept. 29 at 4pm

Our selection criteria consists of several factors but ultimately can be summarized as follows:

Athletes who the coaching staff anticipate will be sufficiently competitive at the current varsity level to win matches this season will make the varsity team, provided there is roster space. Athletes who were competitive in highschool often meet this criteria.  Athletes who do not meet this year's team selection criteria but who we expected to by next season will be able to participate in practices under our red-shirt program, again provided roster space.  We further expect all athletes to be teamwork focused.  Roster spots are only given to athletes who work to develop their training partners and teammates.

Athletes are expected to complete their VBRS and PAR-Q prior to the tryout.

All Final roster decisions are made collectively by the coaching staff and anyone who has not made the varsity roster will be notified by email within 48 hours of the final try-out practice.
