Badminton Selection Criteria

Selection to the Varsity Blues badminton team will be based on demonstration of the following during tryouts:

Demonstrated technical skills with and without movement in drills and matches:
• Footwork – agility, overall court movement, efficiency, speed.
• Technique – shot quality, selection, technical mastery.
• Consistency – accuracy, consistent technique.

Potential for development
• Awareness of what it takes to succeed in competitive badminton and commitment to consistent improvement within the Varsity Blues program.
• Demonstrated success in two previous years of badminton competitions.

Winning attitude to demonstrates the “will to win”
• Commitment to learning and being coached.
• Desire to compete during training and competition.

Conduct and behaviour
• Treats others with respect.
• Adheres to the Student- Athlete Code of Conduct.
• Supports the program, the Faculty and the University of Toronto.

Team first
• Willingness to accept a role within the team at the expense of personal success.

Full commitment to the Varsity Blues badminton program
• Attendance, punctuality, preparedness, communication.
• Team training sessions.

Performance and conduct from previous seasons will also be considered for returning student-athletes. Returning student-athletes are expected to show improvement in technical skills from the previous season.

Registration for tryouts must be done through VBRS before 5 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025. Anyone who is not registered before this date will not be considered for team selection. Proof of PAR-Q completion must also be provided at tryouts.
 
Everyone attending tryouts should bring their own court shoes, racquet, and birdies.
