Women's Rugby Selection Criteria

  • Positional requirements met 
  • Level of fitness adequate for position 
  • Strength and conditioning requirements met 
  • Winning Mentality: Demonstrates the ability to work hard in any situation and shows constant effort to improve in all aspects of the game.
  • Effective Communication: Demonstrates good tone and good communication skills, as well as positive interactions and willing to work through and resolve conflicts that might interfere with the success of the team. 
  • Versatility: Exhibits a balance between offensive and defensive skills as well as the ability to play different positions and with different players on the pitch. 
  • Maturity: Exhibits an ability to adjust to various situations, dealing with adversity, and reacting appropriately. Accepts responsibility and is accountable for actions and learning.
  • Takes initiative and is self‐directed. 
  • Responsible for their academics and takes initiative to make sure academic standards are met.
  • Attendance at training and games: Makes training/competition a priority when scheduling classes and activities. 
  • Maintain a balance when it comes to life's commitments (family, health, academics, rugby, etc.) 
  • Take responsibility for your own development as a player and team member ‐‐ make good nutritional, sleep, training & study choices – attending training is not optional. 
  • Take responsibility for fulfilling all agreements and commitments you make – be honest & reliable.
  • Arrive for training and competition mentally prepared. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to let go of your mistakes in order to give the next opportunity the greatest chance for success.
  • Team Based Skills
  • Committed to the program for 12 months (pre-season, during season, and after season- completing all required components including strength and conditioning, practices, etc.)
  • Effectiveness and efficiency in catch and pass, tackling, defence, ball into contact, breakdown work, set piece and game awareness 
  • Safety: Knowledge of the technical requirements of rugby. This includes tackling, taking the ball into contact, safely falling when tackled, scrummaging, and line outs. Committing the necessary time/effort in order to practice and play safely. 
  • Understand the rules of rugby and can react to various situations on the field
  • Teamwork: The willingness to accept a role that leads to team success. 
  • Shared Purpose: Contributes to the team atmosphere with a shared purpose of creating a successful team. 
  • Good Attitude and Respectful Behavior: Treats others with respect, exhibits enthusiasm and support of program and teammates. Make choices that reflect a winning attitude both on and off the pitch for the team, the program, the Faculty and the University of Toronto. 
  • Always be on time.
  • Potential needs of team: Positional needs and positional suitability, short term/immediate vs long term/future program needs. 
  • Potential for development
  • Commitment to the program to promote a family atmosphere.
  • Committed to promoting a zero-tolerance bullying environment at all times.
  • Passion/drive for the sport of rugby, specifically at U of T.
  • Responds to coaching staff in a reasonable amount of time and keeps a clear line of communication with the coaching staff.
  • Consistently communicates with coaching staff 
  • Consistency in showing/proving that you want to be a part of the program and are open to improving and challenging yourself in order to be your best for both you and the team.
It is the belief of the Varsity Blues women's rugby staff that considering the mix of selection criteria listed above, which includes subjective as well as objective measures in evaluation of performance ability, will result in selection of the best athletes who will work together as an effective team and contribute to team success. The coaching staff, and ultimately the head coach, is responsible for making all athlete selections.
