Curling Selection Criteria

Updated September 2025

Each year, the Varsity Curling Teams have limited spots to represent the University in Intercollegiate competitions and other competitions. As a minimum to be eligible for selection, registered students must meet the requirements and criteria set out by the University in order to participate in OUA and U SPORTS.

Although the Men’s and Women’s teams are separate, they are part of one program, and the same selection criteria applies to all athletes. Typically, the competition schedule starts in October and ends in April, with OUA and the U SPORTS Championships in February /March.

Athlete selections are a collaborative effort by the coaching staff and will be based primarily on formal tryouts.  While fitness training can begin over the summer, curling-specific skills require ice, which we aim to secure by late September. Selection criteria apply to both our Competitive OUA/U-Sports Teams (Men’s and Women’s, each with four core players and one or two alternates) and our development-focused Blue & White Teams. The OUA teams will train independently, with no shared practices with the Blue & White program. Alternates will primarily train alongside Blue and White athletes to support their continued growth.  No single factor outweighs the others. Athletes may be excluded from team selection if they do not meet key non-technical standards such as commitment, attitude, and coachability. Returning players will be evaluated according to expectations set in the previous season.

1. Shows solid technical proficiency—including delivery, weight control, and brushing technique—paired with a minimum of intermediate-level gameplay and a clear understanding of tactics and strategy.”

2. Demonstrates consistent dedication to both physical and mental conditioning, with a strong commitment to regular training and team practices to support ongoing development.

3. Demonstrates a strong willingness to learn and grow, showing coachability alongside a healthy competitive drive to consistently perform at a high level.

4. A good teammate who enhances team dynamics and overall performance through consistent sportsmanship and a strong commitment to team values.

5. Consistently places team success above personal recognition, showing respect for teammates and fostering a collaborative culture rooted in shared goals and selfless support.

6. Shows respect for coaching decisions and takes ownership of personal performance, especially when expectations aren't met.

7. Demonstrates respect for the team and program both on and off the ice, consistently upholding team values and never allowing self-interest to undermine collective success.

Tryouts will take place:

· Sunday September 22 - 10-11:30 am
