Factors considered in the team’s selection include the physical and technical aspects of the game, as well as team dynamics. In addition, preference will be given to players who have played the game at a high level and have a history of succuss at the provincial/state and national levels. It is understood that building a successful team is much more complicated that simply selecting the most talented athletes. Coaches will also consider positional needs, positional suitability, and short- and long-term team goals in the selection process.
Player skills will be evaluated through observations made during tryouts. If applicable, players will also be evaluated based on their performance in previous seasons. It is the goal of the coaching staff to field a highly competitive team and to build a winning culture. In addition, we aim to support student-athletes in meeting the high academic standards set by the University of Toronto. The criteria for selecting players for the team will include the following. The same criteria will also be used to determine playing time and to assess whether players will be given starting or reserve positions.
Offensive Performance
- Ability to make contact against a variety of pitch types (high velocity, low velocity, pitches with movement). Note: special emphasis will be placed on the ability to hit high speed pitches.
- Ability to make adjustments (during at bats, and post at bat)
- Ability to execute batting plans and offensive philosophy set by the coaching staff
- Ability to hit for power and extra-bases and/or play ‘small ball’ (bunting, slapping)
- Base-running
- Times, and metrics will be taken (running, agility, exit velocity, bat speed, etc.)
Defensive Performance
- Fielding ability (for example, footwork and proper sequencing)
- Arm strength and ability to throw from different angles
- Ability to execute the defensive strategies set by the coaching staff
- Throwing accuracy
- Range
- Consistency
- Communication with other players
- Instincts for necessary adjustments/positioning
- Metrics will be taken if necessary (throw speed, release time, ground covered, etc.)
Pitching Performance (if applicable)
- Pitch speed
- Pitch location and command
- Ball movement and proper spin
- Variety and command of pitches
- Situational pitching
- Presence on the mound
- Ability to adjust to game situation
- Communication with the catcher and/or other defensive players
Team Dynamics
- Teamwork and willingness to accept a role that leads to team success.
- Participation within the group concept and being connected with the team in person, in group chats, meetings, etc.
- Versatility, on and off the field. Ability to play multiple positions and willingness to participate in team functions
- Maturity and ability to adjust to situations (for example, dealing with adversity and reacting appropriately).
