All those who try out for the Varsity Blues baseball team are provided a minimum of four hours to display their skills and knowledge. They are observed by no less than three coaches to ensure reliability of assessment. Each assessor uses the following framework and related rating sheets. The results of these assessments are shared with each candidate as part of the final decision at the conclusion of the try out.
- OUA ready: Current or projected ability to compete at the OUA level.
- Throwing: Ability to consistently throw a baseball with accuracy and above average strength at appropriate position.
- Catching: Ability to consistently and successfully field a ball with proper positioning to throw; ability to receive and block pitches; possesses elite arm strength and release times.
- Running: Possess 'elite speed in a sixty metre dash and base-running ability/instincts.
- Hitting: Possess mechanics, power, coordination and understanding of hitting to succeed at the OUA level.
- Pitching: Ability to throw at least two pitches with appropriate velocity and accuracy, mound presence, ability to throw over to all bases, confidence, strong body language, buy in to team’s systems.
- Demonstrates baseball knowledge appropriate to position on the field.
- Demonstrates a willingness to work hard and be coached.
- Shows a desire to be successful and contribute to a cohesive team atmosphere.
- Agrees to adhere to the Varsity Blues Code of Conduct and to represent the team and school in a positive manner on and off the field.
- Takes pride in donning a Varsity Blues uniform.
- Final decision will be by 11 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
