Women's Basketball Selection Criteria

Returning players, recruits and all others will be assessed on their abilities, potential for development and commitment to the basketball program. The goal of the selection is to select a team that is committed to learning and competing at the university level.
The selection process will be based on several factors that include but are not limited to the following:

Technical/tactical/physical factors:
  • Needs of team: positional needs and suitability for short and long-term program needs.
  • Skills and ability to consistently perform at an optimal level: Ability to sustain daily training while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency in technical skills (shooting, passing, dribbling)
  • Potential for development: Demonstrates capacity for improvement such as the ability to apply instructions and feedback in a relatively short amount of time. Demonstrates high competitive spirit in practices and games.
  • Defense: Demonstrate the ability to defend their position and an understanding of team defensive concepts.
  • Basketball IQ: Ability to make and read plays, and being able to apply team principles within an offensive system.
  • Fitness/Physical Attributes: Jumping, speed, agility, coordination, lateral movement, strength and endurance that compares to the team’s average results.
Team commitments:
  • Teamwork: the ability to work as a team for one shared goal. Makes training and team activities a priority. Willingness to sacrifice own goals for team success. Respects others by always showing up on time. 
  • Relationship builder: Committed to building relationships and collaborating with teammates, coaches and support staff to advance our team’s mission and purpose.
  • Effective communication: Demonstrate effective communication skills with all team members and staff. Willing to work through and resolve conflicts that might interfere with team success.
Individual commitments:
  • Pursuit of excellence: Representing the university and the program in a positive and respectful manner in all spaces. Reflecting a winning attitude on and off the court.
  • Maturity/Coachability: Ability to adjust to various situations, dealing with adversity and reacting in a way that values themselves and the team. Ability to be held accountable for actions all while maintaining a positive attitude towards themselves and everyone involved in the program.
  • Leadership Skills: Having the ability to lead themselves and others while demonstrating the ability to be led.
  • Unconditional Effort: Outstanding work ethic on the basketball court and in the classrooms.
 
Final roster will be determined latest on Thursday September 11, 2025.
