Dennis McPhee was named Defensive Line Coach of the Tiger-Cats on January 10, 2013, joining the Black and Gold for his third tour of duty as a Ticats assistant. The 2018 season marked McPhee’s sixth consecutive year and 16th campaign overall with the team dating back to 1995.

In 2018, under McPhee’s guidance, defensive tackle Ted Laurent was named an East Division All-Star for the fifth time in his career and was also named the club’s Most Outstanding Canadian. In previous seasons, defensive end John Chick was named a CFL All-Star in 2016 and Laurent was named a CFL All-Star and Hamilton’s Most Outstanding Canadian in back-to-back seasons (2014, 2015).

McPhee’s previous stints with the Tiger-Cats saw him oversee the linebackers from 1995-97, the defensive line from 1998-2001, and the defensive front from 2004-06. Over this span, the Ticats led the CFL in quarterback sacks in 1999, 2000 and 2004, defensive end Joe Montford, who has since been named to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player three times in 1998, 2000 and 2001, and seven players earned CFL All-Star honours. McPhee also won a Grey Cup with the team in 1999.

McPhee has an abundance of Canadian football coaching experience on his resume. He spent the 2012 season as Defensive Coordinator at Western University, following a five-year stint as Head Coach at Waterloo. McPhee has also served as a head coach at St. Francis Xavier, in addition to assistant coaching positions at McMaster, Guelph and St. FX. He was named the Atlantic Conference’s Coach of the Year with St. FX in 2002. His first coaching gig was in 1984 when he was named McMaster’s Defensive Line Coach.

As a player, McPhee attended training camp with the Toronto Argonauts in 1982 before being released and signed to the Edmonton Eskimos practice roster. He also attended training camp with the Eskimos in 1983 before commencing his coaching career.
