Stinson Says #2 - Rookie Registration
August 18, 2008 - Rookie registration. I remember it like it was yesterday. This is where all of the freshmen and new recruits report to camp [earlier than everyone else] to help them learn the systems and get familiar with the campus before things get heavy.
I helped the recruits check in with a few other veterans and we are excited to see some of the faces that we've heard so much about. It's fun to try and pick out which recruits will be able to step up and contribute first.
I'm impressed with the size, confidence, and professional demeanor of an O-lineman named Steve - he's my pick!
Some players were excited about the upcoming training camp but it was obvious that the new offensive and defensive systems were going to be a lot to handle for these young guys. Maybe a little rest would do them good.
There's a lot of talent waiting to hit the field - the question is; how will they do Monday when they practice with the vets?
Throughout the day a few players came up and introduced themselves to me, one even said to me that "I've been following your career and I was watching for you in the draft." That was a first for me. No one's ever told me that they'd been following me. It was quite the wake-up call - I'm old!
Monday the rookies get a huge eye opener on what it takes to play at the CIS level. Good luck!
Monday we, the vets, also have to test. The "survivor run" is on everyone's mind, its 3 minutes of hell. But at least when it's over we can move onto practice.
Until next time - Go Blues!
