Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

BLUES SEASON COMES TO AN END IN OUA QUARTER-FINAL

In Game 3 of the OUA women's hockey quarter-final, the No. 3 seed in the OUA East University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 3-1 to the No. 2 seed Ottawa Gee-Gees on Sunday (Mar. 1) afternoon at the Minto Sportsplex in Ottawa.

The Blues season concludes with a 2-1 series loss to the Gee-Gees, snapping U of T's streak of consecutive semifinal appearances that dated back to the 2018-19 season.

In a high-flying first period, both teams came out strong with their seasons on the line. Both teams generated high-danger scoring chances but much like Saturday's clash, a goaltending dual between second-year goaltender Lyla McKinnon and Ottawa's Clara Genier ensued as both teams went into the first intermission scoreless.

The second period begun with four-on-four hockey, after Toronto killed of their penalty, the power play went to work. Cycling the puck effectively through the offensive zone, third-year forward Ashley Delahey controlled the puck behind the net and found her twin sister Taylor Delahey near the faceoff circle. The latter ripped a top-corner shot over the glove of Genier for her first goal of the series to give U of T the lead. As the period continued, Toronto kept their foot on the gas pedal, continuing to showcase their speed and generate scoring chances. At the other end of the ice, McKinnon was dialed in, turning aside point-blank Gee-Gees opportunities with some of the best of her 23 saves in the game to keep the Blue and White's one-goal lead intact going into the third period.

Momentum shifted in Ottawa's favour as the third period began. In the opening two minutes of the period, Beatrice Bilodeau found the back of the net on the power play to draw even. As both teams traded chances, Bilodeau found the back of the net once again, storming down the wing and scoring her second goal of the game. The Gee-Gees continued to generate momentum as T.J. Flores took a shot from the point that found the back of the net to give them a two-goal lead.

With a two-goal deficit to erase, U of T continued to fight and played with strong urgency as they looked to put the game back on their side. Generating pressure in the offensive zone, the Blues gave everything they had at the Gee-Gees. Between the pipes, Genier was strong as Toronto continued to chip away. At the other end of the ice, McKinnon continued to give the Blues a chance to win, making key saves as the Gee-Gees continued to look for an insurance marker. As time winded down, the Blues pushed until the final buzzer but were unable to find an equalizer, leading to the conclusion of their season.

The Blues will now turn their attention to the offseason. With a young core of players, U of T will look to build off of the success found this season and return to McCaw Cup contention in the 2026-27 season.
