The No. 6 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's volleyball team knocked off the No. 8 Queen's Gaels by a final score of 3-1 on Saturday (Feb. 7) afternoon inside Goldring Centre – Kimel Family Field House.
Set scores in the match were 18-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-20.
Following a slow start to the day which saw the Gaels pick up a first set win, the Varsity Blues came to life spurred on by the home crowd. Taking back control of the match, Toronto's offence was unstoppable. In total, the Blues registered 15 more kills than Queen's, along with seven service aces and 11 total blocks.
The trio of Maxime Gratton, Hunter Arulpragasam and Iannis Toma were once again extremely effective in providing the Blues with a plethora of attack option. Gratton led the way with a game-high 16.5 points from 14 kills, two service aces and one block assist. Arulpragasam added 12 kills, two aces and one solo block, while Toma registered 14 kills, one solo block and one block assist.
Defensively, Luka Minic was a force in the middle with three solo blocks and three block assists. Meanwhile, fifth-year libero Rylan Armstrong finished the contest with a game-high 12 digs, highlighted by a spectacular diving effort late in the match-winning fourth set.
With 12 straight wins now, the Blues improved their record to 16-1 placing them first overall in the OUA standings. Now four games up on third place, Toronto have clinched a Top 2 seed for the OUA postseason.
The Blues will conclude their regular season with back-to-back home matches versus the Western Mustangs. First serve in Game 1 of the doubleheader is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13. Tickets are available at
