Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

BLUES BEST GEE-GEES IN HOME FINALE

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team wrapped up the 2025-26 regular season with a 3-1 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday (Feb. 13) night at Varsity Arena.

After a pregame ceremony to honour the graduating Blues, both teams took the ice in a tight contest with playoff seeding on the line. Toronto set the pace early in the first period, keeping the Gee-Gees on their heels shift after shift as they built momentum in the offensive zone. The Blue and White's pressure paid off with 66 seconds left in the period. Second-year defender Taylor Thompson threw a shot on net from the top of the faceoff circle that bounced past goaltender Clara Genier to give the Blues a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.

The Blues didn't let up to begin the middle frame with back-to-back goals, 14 seconds apart to take a commanding three-goal lead. First-year forward Petra Klimes gave the Blues their two-goal cushion when she jumped on a loose puck and jammed it into the back of the net. As Toronto went right back to work, second-year forward Jasmine Comeau threaded a tape-to-tape pass to the OUA's leading goal scorer Abby Whitworth. In the slot, Whitworth snapped home a shot for her 20th goal of the season as the Blues chased Genier from the game. As the period progressed, second-year goaltender Lyla McKinnon was putting on a clinic between the pipes. The social science student turned aside multiple quality scoring chances to keep U of T ahead by three goals going into the third period.

In the final frame, McKinnon continued to shine in goal, stifling Ottawa's attack. McKinnon's best of her 35 saves in the game when Gee-Gees forward Naomi Morin was set up on the backdoor but McKinnon slid post-to-post to make a mesmerizing pad save.

The Gee-Gees managed to cut into Toronto's lead when Emery Twardochleb's shot made its way through traffic. U of T kept their composure as goaltender Lauren Mooney was pulled for the extra attacker. The Blues got their bodies in front of shots and sticks in passing lanes while McKinnon continued to slow the play down and keep the puck out of the back of the net. As time winded down, the Blues ended the regular season on a high note with the win.

The Blues will now turn their attention to the 2026 OUA Playoffs. Schedules are to be announced with tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. Games will also be live streamed on oua.tv.
