The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 3-2 to the No. 6 nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons on Saturday (Jan. 31) night in Guelph, Ont.
In the final game of their four-game road trip, the Blues opened the scoring with a power play goal. Third-year forward Ashley Delahey threaded a cross-ice pass to OUA leading goal scorer Abby Whitworth as the third-year commerce student fired home her 18
th goal of the season. Guelph controlled the shot count in the first period but second-year goaltender Lyla McKinnon was on her game. The Toronto native made highlight reel saves all over her crease, keeping the puck out of the net at all costs. Guelph was able to net an equalizer before the end of the period when a loose puck was created and Katherine Heard found the back of the net.
The Blues power play struck again in the second period to regain the lead. First-year forward Petra Klimes battled for position in the offensive zone and snapped a shot through traffic and into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season. The Gryphons continued to apply pressure at the other end of the ice but McKinnon continued to stand tall between the pipes as U of T went into the third period with a one-goal lead.
Momentum shifted early in the third period as Maeve Sutherland-Case scored her 11
th goal of the season in the opening minute of the period to tie the game. Guelph followed up with the go-ahead goal when Alexie Olivier found the back of the net. The Blues had a late push in the period in search of an equalizer, generating scoring chances until the final buzzer but were unable to score an equalizer before time ran out.
The Blues return to Varsity Arena on Friday (Feb. 6) night when they host the Western Mustangs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., with tickets available at
