The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 4-0 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves as Saturday (Jan. 31) night in Thunder Bay, Ont.
The Thunderwolves grabbed the lead less than three minutes in to a tightly contested first period as Josh Lehto found the back of the net for his third goal of the season. The Blues and Thunderwolves traded chances as first-year Blues goalie Nick Surzycia and Lakehead's Carson Cherepak traded saves. The Thunderwolves doubled their lead late in the period when Keighan Gerrie shot touched net.
In the second period, Zane Rowan struck for his second goal of the season. The Blues were able to garner momentum as they pushed offensively but Cherepak was on his game to turn aside Toronto's chances. The Thunderwolves took a 4-0 lead before the second intermission as Riley Sharun added a late period marker.
In the third period the Blues pushed for a comeback but Lakehead's defence was strong to preserve the lead. The Blues fired 28 shots on goal but Cherepak was able to earn the shutout. At the other end of the ice, Surzycia was strong in goal, making key saves to keep U of T in the game.
