Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

SURZYCIA STOPS 32 AGAINST TMU

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 3-2 to the TMU Bold on Saturday (Jan. 23) night at Varsity Arena.

The Blues struck first in the opening frame as second-year defenceman Ravir Gill-Shane capitalized on the power play, firing home a shot from the top of the faceoff circle to finish off a setup from fourth-year forward Eddie Yan. U of T dictated the pace of play in the first period, outshooting the Bold 15-7 and keeping the puck in the offensive zone. With less than two minutes remaining, Joseph Ianniello evened the score.

The Blues power play stayed red hot in the second period, regaining momentum when first-year forward Ryan Evenhuis capitalized in front of the TMU net. The Bold poured shots on goal towards first-year goalie Nick Surzycia but the Etobicoke native was up to the task, keeping pucks out of harms way to keep the Blue and White ahead by one-goal. His best save of the game came when he stood tall against Marko Djordjevic on a breakaway. Late in the period, TMU scored the equalizer as Djordjevic's marker tied the game at 2-2 to set up a tightly contested third period.

57 seconds into the period, Gavin Grundner gave TMU their first lead of the game. Finding themselves trailing, U of T kept their feet moving and fired pucks towards goaltender Kai Edmonds in search of a tying goal. With Surzycia to the bench for the extra attacker, one final push wasn't enough for the Blues to find the back of the net.

Surzycia finished the game with 32 saves.

The Blues are back in action on Saturday (Jan. 24) night when they host the Waterloo Warriors at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., with tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. The game will also be streamed live on oua.tv.
